Stay Safe from Leptospirosis with Alay Buhay!

In a statement last June 15, the Department of Health (DOH) issued a warning regarding the dangers of contracting leptospirosis when wading unprotected through flood waters.

As of date, a total of 878 cases nationwide have been identified, with the numbers rising during the rainy season.

WHAT IS LEPTOSPIROSIS?

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection transmitted through contact with contaminated water or soil. It can spread through the urine of infected animals, especially rats.

Common symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headaches, and vomiting. In severe cases, leptospirosis can lead to kidney failure, meningitis, and even death.

KEEP YOURSELF PROTECTED While leptospirosis is a cause for concern, it's also preventable. Here are some steps you can take to protect yourself:

  • Avoid wading in floodwaters: If possible, wear boots or waterproof shoes when navigating floodwaters.

  • Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and clean water, especially after being outdoors or around animals.

  • Rat control: Implement measures to keep rats away from your home and property.

  • Be informed: Stay updated on leptospirosis advisories from your local health department.

Alay Buhay echoes this reminder and stands with the community in promoting awareness and preventive measures against this serious illness. By following these preventive measures and staying informed, we can significantly reduce the risk of leptospirosis infection. We remain committed to working alongside the community and health institutions to safeguard public health and well-being during the rainy season and beyond.
